Our Family Farm History
Birdie Hogan Farm is a fourth-generation family business. In 1918 T.E. Hogan came to Indian River County to grow tomatoes. Tomatoes were the predominate crop until the 1940's, when T.E.'s wife, Birdie, thought citrus would be a good crop for the family to plant. Birdie believed so much in citrus that she single-handedly grew and budded enough grapefruit trees for over one hundred acres. From the 1940's till 2004 grapefruit was the family business. With diseases such as greening and canker and the damaging hurricanes of 2004, T.E.'s grandson, Doyle, decided to push out over half of his trees and plant lush pastures for cattle. Since 2004 Doyle has operated the majority of the land as a cattle operation.
In 2012, fourth-generation farmer Britain Hogan started growing leafy greens and vine ripe tomatoes. The vegetable and tomato crops have increased every year. As a family, Doyle and Britain take pride in keeping the land as beautiful as it was when the first generation farmed the very same land. As you explore our site we hope the passion of local food and sustainable farming inspires you as much as it does us.
